This page shows live National Weather Service flood warnings, watches, and advisories for Florida counties in real time. The NWS issues these alerts based on current rainfall, river gauge readings, and storm surge forecasts. Alerts are updated as conditions change.
A flood watch means conditions are favorable for flooding to develop. A flood warning means flooding is occurring or is imminent. A flash flood warning is the most urgent — it means dangerous flash flooding is already happening or will happen very soon. If you receive a flash flood warning, move to higher ground immediately.
South Florida (Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach) floods frequently due to its extremely flat terrain and high water table. The Tampa Bay area is vulnerable to storm surge flooding. The Big Bend region and Panhandle are prone to river flooding after heavy rain. The Kissimmee River basin in Central Florida can flood after prolonged rainfall.
Do not drive through flooded roads — just 6 inches of moving water can knock a person down and 12 inches can sweep away a small vehicle. Move to higher ground if ordered to evacuate. Avoid walking in moving water. If trapped in a vehicle by rising water, get out immediately and move to higher ground.
Florida does not require flood insurance by law, but mortgage lenders require it for homes in FEMA-designated Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHAs). Given Florida's flood risk, flood insurance is strongly recommended for all Florida homeowners, even those outside mapped flood zones. NFIP flood insurance has a 30-day waiting period.
